Why Do Cars Need Wheel Alignment?

Your vehicle need to have it's wheels aligned primarily to make it drive in a straight line. Having properly aligned steering will also prolong the life of your car tyres, and make your vehicle safer to drive.

It's important that all four wheels point in the same direction, but over time the wheel alignment of you vehicle can become less accurate. There are many reasons for this, but the commonest ones we see in our Petersfield workshop are due to suspension wear and from damage caused by driving through potholes.

Modern cars have much more sophisticated suspension and steering systems than classic cars ever did. The modern car is built for comfort, performance and handling. Wheel alignment is key to achieving this. The steering and suspension needs to be measured and adjusted within the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. On modern cars and vans these tolerances are very fine and can only be correctly achieved by measuring all four wheels, with a proper full four wheel alignment system. At Automatt in Petersfield we have invested in the necessary 4 wheel laser alignment system to keep your vehicle running straight and true.

How Do I Know If My Car's Wheels Are Out Of Alignment?

It's not always obvious to know if your wheel alignment is out of adjustment, especially if the misalignment is slight, but there are signs to look out for:

  • Uneven front or rear tyre wear
There should not be any 'bald' areas on your car's tyres. Often, when your wheel alignment is out of adjustment the car tyre will be worn on the inner or outer edges of the tyre tread. Sometimes the rubber of the car tyre will be worn through to the 'cords' underneath, which is very dangerous. If you see this, contact us immediately.
  • The car pulls to the left or right
When driving along a straight flat road, your car should drive in a reasonably straight line without you having to compensate through the steering to keep the car driving in a straight line. If the car drifts to the left or right under braking, it could also be an indication that your vehicle's wheel alignment needs checking. Or, possibly there is a problem with your brakes that also needs attention.
  • A crooked steering wheel
The most obvious symptom of wheel alignment being out of adjustment is when the steering wheel is not straight, even when driving along a straight, level road.

If you notice any of these symptoms on your vehicles, give a a ring on 01730 858120 and we'll get you booked in for a 4 wheel laser alignment check as soon as possible in our Petersfield workshop.

What's The Difference Between Tracking and Four Wheel Alignment?

Tracking, although fairly rudimentary was all there was, when classic cars (as we refer to them now) had very little or no suspension or steering adjustment. Any measurement and adjustment for wheel alignment tended to be only on the front wheels. This measurement was only for the ‘Toe’ angle. Tracking on the front wheels, called  ‘two wheel alignment’ does not take into account the wheel alignment of the rear wheels. So, if you have the fronts wheels adjusted and set straight, and the rear wheels are out of alignment, the car may still pull to the right or left, and tyres could still wear unevenly. Early equipment to adjust wheel alignment used gauges which usually hung-on the front wheels . The operator then peered through a scope, or viewed a light/laser beam on a scale. This wheel alignment system does not allow for run out compensation, due to damage of the wheel rims, so the wheel alignment result can only be, at best, approximate.

4 Wheel Alignment

With the advancement of technology, computers and lasers, 4 wheel alignment became a reality. It's now the recommended wheel alignment process as it achieves precise adjustment. Four Wheel Alignment measures a minimum of 12 angles and compares them to the alignment data specified by the vehicle manufacturer. With accurate readings, Four Wheel Alignment allows the 'toe' adjustments of individual wheels which ensure the steering wheel is set straight, and the vehicle drives in a straight line. Further adjustments of caster and camber, help to ensure optimum driving performance and fuel savings.

On modern cars, tracking alone is unlikely to achieve complete wheel alignment on your vehicle or complete customer satisfaction, which is why AutoMatt in Petersfield always recommend 4 wheel laser wheel alignment for all cars, old and new alike.

Note – When asking for quotes for wheel alignment services, always ask about the actual service you’ll get. Many garages use the term 'Wheel Alignment' when actually they only have the capability to offer Tracking! Unlike AutoMatt, where we have invested in the 4 wheel laser alignment systems necessary to set and adjust a vehicle's wheel alignment properly.
