What is an MOT test?

To ensure your vehicle complies with current road safety and environmental standards, and to make sure it's in a roadworthy condition, it must have an MOT Test.. You must have an MOT test every year once your vehicle is more than three years old. For taxis, ambulances and people carriers with 13 or more seats the MOT Test must be done annually, right from the start.

As of 20th May 2018 the MOT Test changed and new MOT rules came into force. These new rules affect anyone driving a car, van, motorcycle and other light passenger vehicles. Check out the new MOT rules 2018, to make sure you know about the changes in the MOT Test and how it could affect your vehicle to make sure it’s road legal.

The Myth of the MOT Grace Period

If you drive a vehicle on a public road, it must be roadworthy. No ifs, no buts. This means your vehicle must pass an MOT test every year, if your vehicle is more than three years old.

However, some people believe that there is a 'two week grace period' for lapsed MOTs - this is actually, not true. If you're caught with an invalid MOT you may be prosecuted, unless you can prove you are on your way to an appointment for an MOT examination. To avoid this situation, AutoMatt will send you an MOT reminder in good time to be able to book in your vehicle for an MOT test in Petersfiels at our brand new testing lane in our Petersfield workshop.

Without a current MOT, your insurance will be be invalid. Not having a valid MOT certificate is also illegal. Under Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, you run the risk of getting a £1,000+ fine and six to eight points on your licence.

The only time you can legally drive without an MOT is if you're travelling to a pre-booked MOT appointment. If you are stopped by the police while driving to your MOT Test in Peterfield appointment you may need proof of that appointment.  As part of our customer service at AutoMatt, we are happy to provide you with that proof if you were driving to our garage in Petersfield for the said MOT Test. If you are unsure when your MOT is due, use the official MOT status checker.

Only tractors, vehicles that run on electricity, vehicles newer than three years old and cars or motorbikes made before 1960, are exempt from the MOT Test rules.

If your MOT is about to expire, book online with us at AutoMatt Garage in Petersfield for an MOT Test.

You can renew your MOT is one month before the expiry date. If you do that, effectively you'll have 13-month MOT. But, remember you cannot drive your vehicle on a public highway without a current MOT test certificate.

What's included in an MOT Test?

During your MOT test in Petersfield one of our DVSA accredited vehicle technicians will inspect your vehicles condition to ensure it meets the minimum required standards as set out by legislation in the MOT Test regulation manuals. The MOT Test is not the same as a service to your vehicle, it is a check to ensure your vehicle is not dangerous to be driven on the road. The main areas we will check include the following:

Vehicle Identification Number

The MOT test checks that the Vehicle Identification Number, commonly referred to as the VIN, is present and legibly displayed on your vehicle.

Registration Plate

The MOT tester will check the condition, security, legibility and the format of letters and numbers on your registration plate.

Lights

The MOT test checks the condition, operation, headlamp aim, security and colour of your vehicles lights.

Steering and Suspension

The MOT tester in Petersfield will also check the steering and suspension components for location, excess wear, condition and correct operation.

Windscreen Wipers and Washer Bottle

During the MOT the tester will check the operation of your vehicle's wipers and washers ensuring they work properly and give the driver a clear view of the road.

Front Windscreen

Your vehicle's windscreen is checked for any chips or cracks. The maximum damage size is 10mm in the drivers’ line of vision, and 40mm in the remaining area swept by the wiper blades.

Horn

The MOT test in Petersfield will check the horn’s operation for effectiveness and suitability.

Seatbelts

All seatbelts including those in the rear of the vehicle are checked for type, condition, correct operation and security and that all compulsory seatbelts are in place.

Seats

Your vehicle’s front seats are checked for security during the MOT test.

Fuel system

The fuel system is checked during the MOT test for leaks and that the fuel cap fastens and seals securely.

Exhaust and Emissions

The MOT test checks your exhaust emissions, ensuring that the vehicle is within the specified limits, and that the exhaust system is complete, secure, without serious leaks and silences effectively.

Bodywork

Vehicle structure and body shell are checked during the MOT test for excessive corrosion or damage in specified areas of the vehicle. A sharp edge on bodywork can also result in an MOT failure.

Doors

The MOT test in Petersfield will check that the doors of your vehicle open and close correctly and that they latch securely in a closed position. Front doors should open from both the inside and outside of the vehicle. Rear doors also need to be opened, and then latch securely to gain access to testable items like rear seatbelts.

Mirrors

The mirrors on your vehicle are checked during the MOT test for condition and security.

Wheels and Tyres

The nominated MOT tester will check the vehicle's wheels and tyres for: condition, security, tyre size, type and depth of tread (min 1.6mm).

Brakes

The MOT tests the efficiency of the vehicle's braking performance, condition and operation. Most vehicles are tested on a roller brake tester, although some require a road test and the use of the MOT garage’s ‘Tapley Meter’.
