What is an MOT test?

An MOT test checks that your vehicle meets the minimum legal standards for road safety and environmental performance. Once a vehicle is more than three years old, it must pass an MOT every year to remain road legal.

Certain vehicles (such as taxis, ambulances and passenger vehicles with 13 or more seats) require annual testing from their first year of registration.

Are MOT rules still changing?

Yes. While a major set of changes came in on 20 May 2018, the MOT inspection manuals and MOT testing guide continue to be updated by the DVSA to reflect modern vehicles, testing standards and safety requirements.

For example, the DVSA issued MOT special notice 04-24 confirming updates to the inspection manual and testing guide from 29 November 2024.

You can also view the latest amendments to the official manual here: MOT inspection manual updates (cars and light commercial vehicles), and DVSA special notices here: MOT manuals and special notices.

The myth of the MOT grace period

There is no grace period for an expired MOT. If your vehicle is driven on a public road, it must be roadworthy and have a valid MOT certificate.

Driving without a valid MOT is only permitted if you are travelling directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment (or to a repair appointment following a failed test).

Without a current MOT, your insurance may be invalid and you could face enforcement action under Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

If you are stopped while travelling to an MOT appointment, you may be asked for proof. At Auto Matt Garage, we are happy to provide confirmation for customers attending our Petersfield workshop.

Not sure when your MOT is due? Check it instantly using the official MOT status checker.

Vehicles exempt from MOT testing include tractors, vehicles under three years old, and cars or motorcycles manufactured before 1960. Full details are available on the DVSA exemption list.

You can renew your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date. Book early and stay protected.

What is included in an MOT test?

During your MOT test, one of our DVSA-accredited technicians will inspect your vehicle against the legal standards set out in the official MOT inspection manuals.

An MOT is not the same as a service. It confirms your vehicle is safe and legal to drive on the day of the test, not its long-term mechanical condition or maintenance schedule.

Frequently asked MOT questions

How long does an MOT test take?

Most MOT tests take around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle.

Can I drive my vehicle if the MOT has expired?

You may only drive to a pre-booked MOT appointment or to a repair following an MOT failure.

How early can I renew my MOT?

You can renew your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before expiry and keep the same renewal date.

Do you carry out Class 7 MOT tests in Petersfield?

Yes. Auto Matt Garage is equipped to carry out Class 7 MOT tests for eligible vans and light commercial vehicles.

What’s the difference between an MOT and a service?

An MOT is a legal safety and emissions inspection. A service is routine maintenance that supports reliability, performance and longevity.

What should I check before an MOT to avoid a failure?

Check your lights, tyres, washer fluid, wipers, horn and number plates. If you are unsure, we can carry out a pre-MOT check.

What happens if my vehicle fails the MOT?

We will explain the reasons clearly, then provide options. If you wish, we can carry out repairs and arrange a retest in line with MOT rules.
