Faulty Diesel Injector Test

In the workshop today at AutoMatt in Petersfield, we have a Ford Fiesta Diesel that's not running well. We suspected that one of the diesel fuel injectors was misfiring, causing the running problem.

To diagnose which injector was faulty we used our injector leak off testing equipment. This tool measures the amount of diesel fuel that manages to 'leak' past the internal seals of the diesel fuel injector, thus indicating that it is faulty. A diesel fuel injector that is working properly should have minimal leakage. 

In the photo we can see that all 4 injectors have some leakage, but No.1 is far worse than the rest. No.2 and No.3 are also showing signs of wear, while No.4 is ok.

In this situation it's a good idea to consider replacing all 4 diesel fuel injectors at the same time. Because, it's very likely injector 4 is going to fail in the not to distant future as well. Meaning the vehicle would need to be repaired for a second time, which would incur unnecessary expense.

There are many reasons why diesel fuel injectors fail, but the main reason we see this kind of failure, is because if the deposits left inside of the fuel injector by the bio fuels we have to use at the pumps. Did you know that in the UK your diesel fuel contains up to 7% of bio fuel? This bio fuel causes diesel injector failure.
